parradise
‘Parradise’ is quite literally a slice of paradise we have created in the quaint village of Parra. The brief was to restore and design an extension for this 100 year old uniquely Goan home while respecting its heritage but looking towards the future.
Right from our initial discussion we knew that we were creating something that would need to maintain a fine balance between the old and the new. While from the outside with its verandah, arched windows, and pitched Mangalore tiled roof it looks like any other Goan home, the insides are quite atypical of one.
We dropped the red oxide flooring for a cool grey terrazzo, the ornate chandeliers for paper, fabric, terracotta and metal lights and traditional furniture for contemporary, clean and mid-century modern pieces. The open kitchen/ dining area, staircase and the master bedroom are new additions to the home. Instead of trying to mimic the architecture of the existing structure, we designed the extension to be contemporary and clean. It’s definitely important to respect the past but also to design and build work that is representative of us as architects and designers of the 21st century. Working with local materials, sourcing from local antique stores, engaging with Goan artists and artisans were all integral to the design process.
