casa gracia
Casa Gracia is a 132 year old house in Goa. Since the home was built more than a century ago, the main challenge was to retain the bones of the home while taking into consideration the necessities of modern day living.
We decided to retain and use elements of architectural significance as an inspiration We redesigned certain elements that felt dated or obsolete. Like most old Goan homes, the walls of the house were built in laterite stone and mud, and measure about 2 feet in width, so we had to be extremely careful while creating openings. Lime plaster is a building material that allows the walls of the home to breathe and hence it was an obvious decision to retain it. It’s imperfect undulated finish only adds to the wabi-sabi charm of the house.
For the interiors, we decided to go with a fresh palette – the butterscotch walls, dark brown doors and beige glossy tiles were replaced with a soft white walls, fresh sage and cool grey cement flooring. Most of the furniture is refurbished pieces that belonged to the home itself.
